ASUS complete U36S Review: Better than a MacBook Pro?
The U36S is an ultraportable ASUS 13.3-inch with a magnesium and aluminum chassis weighing just 3.1 pounds. At just 0.75 “thick and over 8 hours of battery life, this notebook can be one of the best buys of this year, Here’s a tip: Keep reading if you are considering buying a MacBook Pro for Christmas.
Construction and design
The U36S ASUS ($ 899. 99) has committed an aesthetic rather gray and black. The surfaces of the notebook are made from a magnesium-aluminum alloy, which is extremely strong and light. The laptop completely, including its large 8-cell battery weighs only 3.11 pounds. In addition, the laptop is exceptionally slim measuring just three quarters of an inch with the lid closed.
The build quality is excellent, the chassis is almost inflexible and the lid has a strong protection of the metal alloy support. I like how the top of the frame is molded in one piece metal alloy, including the keyboard surround. Finally, anti-glare properties of the metal alloy does not show fingerprints or dust and should resist scratches quite well. The only area of the build quality could be improved is the screen bezel, the shiny plastic is difficult to keep clean as the surface of the glossy screen.
Unlike many other armored laptops (the ones with the logos of fruit on the eyelids), upgrading the RAM inside the U36S is easily accomplished by removing user panel at the bottom of the chassis. To get to the hard drive is another thing, the whole chassis has to be dismantled. This is a shame, I guess a good number of customers want to upgrade to an SSD or at least a faster hard drive.
Ports and Features
The U36S ASUS has a standard range of ports for a 13.3-inch notebook that includes a single USB 3.0 port. It has no internal optical drive, an ExpressCard slot, DisplayPort, eSATA o. All image descriptions from left to right.
