Some of us have had friendship where there aren’t words or pretty much even a hand shake involved. Personally, in my life, this relationship would be with the guy from the parking lot near my office. We never even talk, we just nod at each other. Such a friendship happened in Kansas City, Missouri where a nine year old girl Klynn Scales, used to smile at an officer everyday. And, the officer got pretty used to it. And when one day when she didn’t smile, he realized something was off.
The Scales family were born and raised in Kansas City. While they had great love for their city, their neighborhood wasn’t exactly too friendly. The place was engulfed in drugs and violence and Klynn’s mother often worried that this wasn’t the right place for a child.
With parent’s like hers, Klynn had to take control of her family to feed her siblings. She used to steal from the local 7-Eleven. She didn’t like it, but she had to do it in order for her siblings to survive.
The neighbors knew about their poverty stricken life and news slipped to the local PD as well. There was one cop in particular that was a light in this girl’s dark life. “Through all the bad situations, I would just picture him saying that he was here for us – and that if we ever needed him, he would be right there. Those words would come to me during the worst times of my childhood life”, said the adult Klynn. Klynn repeatedly said that the cop was the one person in her life that she trusted.
This created a sort of a daily routine where the cop would check onto the little girl and the two would just smile each other. However, one day, the girl wasn’t there and the cop’s gut told him something was wrong.
RUSHING TO HELP
The cop immediately went over to Klynn’s place to find the poor girl on the floor gasping for breath. He rushed her straight to the hospital in just a few minutes.
It turns out Klynn was suffering from severe malnutrition and that was the reason why she collapsed. She lived to tell the tale after her gruesome episode but shortly after, the family moved to Texas. She never thanked her hero and twenty years later, decided to track him down.
FINDING THE SAVIOR
Obviously, Klynn decided to use Facebook to find the cop. Kansas City PD Sergeant Jones read the post and contacted the cop Jeff Colvin and told he how the girl that lived down the street was looking for him.
BACK ONCE AGAIN
This is the picture from their reunion and their smiles just say it all. Colvin was ecstatic to meet her and he admitted that he was curious what happened to Klynn. But, their reunion made Colvin realize something.
THE RIGHT CAREER
Colvin talked about how his job as a police officer wasn’t easy. He said that in the job, he often thought whether he had done anything important and saved someone. He said that the answer can greatly effect your life. But, when he met Scales, he knew he had chosen the right career.
FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS
Colvin was her inspiration, and that’s why, when they met that day, Klynn had already enrolled herself as a police recruit in Housten. But, she had another surprise for her hero.
Scales wore a personalized metal bracelet to honor Sgt. Jeff Colvin. She said that he was there when she had no one and he truly had her back…
