Everything You’ve Always Wanted To Know About ‘Gilligan’s Island’

IT NEVER OFFICIALLY ENDED

The final episode of the show ended while the castaways were still on the island. The professor was really happy on the island as he had found respect here he could never have in the real world. He did some epic stuff there but couldn’t build a raft from the remains of S.S. Minnow. He had a navy background and could easily build the said raft but obviously, he wasn’t hoping to return

THE LAGOON

We all saw a lagoon on the show however it wasn’t a real lagoon. It was just a pool that was built on the CBS lot. Later, the pool was destroyed and made into a parking lot.

GILLIGAN’S FIRST NAME

The show writers said that Gilligan was actually the characters last name. When it was asked what the first name was, they replied that it was Willy. Willy Gilligan is actually a decent name.

DAWN WELLS MEETING A FAN

She was vacationing on the Solomon Island and she along with friend went to an island nearby. There were a couple of people there and a man recognized her and said that she was the girl of her dreams. She was the girl he’d like to take to prom. She was the girl who understood her problems.

ALAN HALE’S AUDITION

The producer reported that Hale had the best audition from the entire cast. They didn’t think that they would fine the skipper in time, but Hale blew them away. Hale rode a horse from Zion National Park to the highway, hitchhiked to Vegas and took a flight to LA where his audition was.

TINA LOUISE ISN’T THE NICEST PERSON ON SET

Tina completely separated herself from the rest of the cast. She’d eat alone and spend most of her time on her own. It was reported that when she agreed to do the show, it was decided that she would be the main actress. So, she sort of went sour but didn’t leave the show.

FILMING NEXT TO A HIGHWAY

The island they were shooting on was close to a highway and sometimes they had to end filming for the day because the place was too noisy.

NATALIE SCHAFER DOING THE STUNTS

The woman was 60-years old at the time the show was filmed. But, she wasn’t one to shy away from a dangerous situations. Mrs. Howell never needed a stunt double and did all her action scenes on her own.

BACKUS WAS A CHEAPSKATE

The cast absolutely adored Jim Backus for his jokes. But, the cast did sometimes say that he was sort of a cheapskate. When they would go to a restaurant or something, Backus would reply that he had left his wallet home. Somewhere in the midst of all that, Backus gave a $300 check to Schafer for all the meals he had skipped on.

SEASON FOUR

The idea for a season four was pitched but got scraped to make room for Gunsmoke after the cast had already purchased homes in LA in preparation for the fourth season.
