This was just a regular dive for this expert. But, she had no idea this routine dive would turn into a life-threatening as well as a memorable experience. Witness the story of the diver who thought that trouble had her in her clutches, but had no idea the trouble was yet to come.
Veteran marine biologist Nan Hauser had spent the better part of life among whales. For 28 years, she was the lead diver to turn the wild waters into a whale sanctuary. She was quite famous and was a regular on the Discovery Chanel and Animal Planet. She has a lot of experience, but that wasn’t enough to prepare her for what was on its way.
THE DANGER COMES
This was a routine dive. Hauser rode a boat to the spot and dropped into the water. However, only a few seconds later, she realized a male humpback whale was swimming towards her. Hauser had never dealt with this exact mammal in the past, so it would be an understatement to say that she was concerned.
THE SINKING FEELING
The marine biologist didn’t want to interact with the whale. But, instead of swimming past her, the whale came right for her. The whale kept swimming till Hauser was on his head. Hauser just couldn’t understand the whale’s behavior.
SCARED FOR HER LIFE
Hauser was no stranger to huge whales, but this was the first one that succeeded in terrifying her. The whale was rolling in the water and started to nudge Hauser. First gently, but then aggressively. And, that’s when she realized, she’s in trouble.
BRACING FOR IMPACT
The whale continued to push Hauser with a closed mouth for the next ten minutes. Hauser said that she thought that lasted for hours and that she was prepared to die.
PREPARING HER DEATH
The crew on board the ship had an aerial drone in the area recording everything as part of the research. However, when they witnessed what was happening, they were certain that Hauser was about to meet her maker. They even switched the cameras off because they didn’t want to record Hauser’s death.
As the whale continued to push her deeper into the abyss, she realized there was another whale swimming close by. That whale was also demonstrating odd behavior. But, she had no idea there would be a third fish lurking nearby, and that one would be a predator.
As she saw the fish, she instantly realized the creature before her. It was the most fearsome aquatic creature today – the tiger shark…
Hauser totally forgot about the whales and was now worried about the tiger shark attacking her. She was already at the risk of losing everything but tried to give herself one last chance and dashed for her boat.
Hauser finally made it back to her boat in one piece. She was safe now and had a few minutes to think calmly and she realized why the whales were behaving erratically and why that one whale was pushing her.
She finally realized that the whale was actually trying to save her. At first, the whale was trying to warn her. But, when Hauser didn’t understand, the whale started pushing her to get her away from the danger, the tiger shark. You might’ve heard about humans saving whales, but this is the first time the roles were reversed.
