Football shoes date to the time of King Henry VIII. His majesty ordered several pairs in 1526…45 velvet pairs and 1 leather pair for soccer. Since then football shoes have changed to be a significant part of the sport and today they’re made out of materials such as carbon fiber and artificial leather.

Just like soccer itself soccer boots have experienced a lot of changes over the years. Before 1891 studs…blades or any other type of sole weren’t permitted. Following the 1891 changes…studs and blades became legal so long as they were crafted from leather and never as big as one half an inch. These types of studs and blades were originally hammered into the shoes and professional players of the time had quite a few pairs with numerous stud lengths which is probably the first time soccer shoes have advanced.

The second development started in the mid-1950s which is the most controversial. Soccer heritage mentioned that throughout the 1950’s in Switzerland…Adidas who has been Germany’s shoe supplier kitted the German team with the very first ever screw-in-studs soccer shoes. However…Puma have counter stated that they had been providing screw-in-studs since 1952. Nonetheless whomever developed screw-in-studs the next development had been the creation of the screw-in-studs boots.

However…between 1950 and 1960 football boot design took a huge step forward and shoes really begun to make a difference on the game. In Northern Europe football shoes still had the ankle protection…and the true explanation they were called boots. However…in South America the boots were much more flexible and light with no need of ankle protection. Polymer extrusion technology and various materials permitted the development of a more flexible sole…and studs had been substituted by blades that offered players extra stability. Today there are football boots that weigh only 200g and with each passing football season…the football boots are getting more and more advanced…and now there are carbon sole plates adaptive studs that will extend and retract by up to 3mm.

Looking to the long run there’s going to be more advancements to soccer boot technology which will make the players perform even better and perhaps shoes that could react to certain pitch conditions…whether that be rain during the game or the pitch becoming drier…the shoes will adjust accordingly.

Boot technology has come such a long way since King Henry VIII and exactly who knows the other aspects of football will evolve like soccer boots.
