Why Should We Include Fish Oil In Our Diet?

Eating fish is very beneficial to our health. Not only is it a source of low fat protein, but fish also provides omega-3, a form of polyunsaturated fatty acid that lowers your chances of getting a heart attack. Heart disease claims millions of lives each year; therefore, it is highly advisable to include fish in our diet.  Some fishes that contain the largest concentrations of omega-3 include herring, Albacore tuna, mackerel, bluefish, salmon, and sablefish. Generally all fish and shellfish has omega 3.

Omega-3 and Fish Oil Supplements

Research findings from population studies, laboratory tests and scientific observations with patients showed beneficial effects of omega-3 to health.

Researchers found the good effects of omega 3 fatty acids during an observation of the dietary habits of Greenland Eskimos, whose primary food is fish. These people have almost zero incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Other people that consume large quantities of seafood and fish and have a recorded low rate of heart disease are the Dutch, Japanese, and the Scandinavians.

Michael Burr, M.D., of the Medical Research Council in Cardiff, Wales, recommends to his patients to eat at least two servings of fish or seafood every week, he found out that this dietary adjustment made a great difference: Those patients who took his advice lived a longer life than those who didn’t.  For those who had already experienced a heart attack and survived were 29% less probable to die from heart disease in the next 2 years after they began regularly incorporating seafood and fish in their overall diets.

In another study, results show that unborn and newborn babies need small amounts of omega-3 for suitable brain development, as well as the development of the nervous system and eye functions. As the fetus develops, it begins to absorb DHA, a form of omega-3, from the mother’s womb. After birth, the baby receives DHA through breast milk. This is why pregnant and nursing moms are highly encouraged to eat a substantial amount of fish.

Fish oil is definitely healthy when obtained naturally through diet. But careful when selecting fish oil supplements. Though many have testified of the benefits of fish oil supplements, their safety has not been adequately proven through extensive research. In reality, fish-liver oils carry high levels of cholesterol, in addition to vitamins A and D, all of which could be harmful when ingested in large amounts.
