LGBTQ+ Celebrities: Stars Open Up About Their Sexuality

Billie Joe Armstrong

Billie Joe Armstrong, the singer, guitarist, and main songwriter of Green Day is one of those guys who everybody loves. You’ll often see memes joking about how Billie doesn’t appear to age at all, but if that’s all you heard about him, you should definitely check out his best musical output, like Dookie or American Idiot.

Regarding his sexual orientation, Billie has been open about his bisexuality since the 90s, stating that it’s something beautiful.

I think people are born bisexual, and it’s just that our parents and society kind of veer us off into this feeling of ‘oh, I can’t’.” Billie told to The Advocate magazine in 1995.

Megan Fox

Everybody remembers Megan Fox for her role as Mikaela Barnes in the box-office juggernaut Transformers, released in 2007. It seems like a long time ago, huh? In case you’re too young to fully recall those days, let’s just say that having a crush on Megan was pretty common.

Megan has expressed in numerous interviews that after the media exposure to which she was submitted after Transformers, she decided to create a character for her public persona in order to safeguard her own self. This makes sense since she describes herself as very shy, and that’s probably why most people don’t know much about her sex life. However, when interviewed by the media, she once said the following:

I think people are born bisexual and then make subconscious choices based on the pressures of society. I have no question in my mind about being bisexual“.

Anna Paquin

Megan Fox, similarly to Billie Joe Armstrong, talks about her bisexuality with great pride, and she also criticized the naturalization of heterosexuality and the deep-rooted effects that societal pressures can have on anyone’s choices.

Moreover, Anna Paquin is another famous actress who’s been open about the joy of accepting one’s sexual orientation. Anna is married to Stephen Moyer, who co-starred with her on the movie True Blood. In 2014, Paquin revealed that she’s bisexual, also stating that marriage is not about gender, but about love.

Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X has ruled over 2019. The 20-year-old rocketed to fame with his country-trap fusion hit Old Town Road. The song sparked a fight with Billboard because they took it off from the country charts, but the young rapper was the one who smiled last when his remix with Billy Ray Cyrus hopped to number one and stayed there for a record-breaking 19 weeks.

After the Old Town Road frenzy, he released an EP titled 7. On the last day of Pride Month, he announced on Twitter that one of the songs’ lyrics were actually meant to express that he was gay. His courage is something that shouldn’t be underestimated since the rap community can be homophobic and chauvinistic.

Miley Cirus

After Lil Nas X came out, several artists congratulated him, and he answered to the few negative comments with hilarious jokes to show that no backlash would affect him. Needless to say that the rapper set a great example for his fans who might feel insecure about their sexuality.

Another musician who’s been publicly open about her sexuality is Miley Cirus. The star stated in 2016 that she considered herself pansexual, which means that she feels attracted to people independently of their sex or gender identity.

I always hated the word bisexual, because that’s even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or a girl.” Miley Cirus told to Variety magazine in 2016.

Demi Lovato

Pop singer Demi Lovato has been part of the pop mainstream for a couple of years already (remember that she rose to fame with Disney’s Camp Rock movie, released in 2008). She’s had a role on Glee, released six albums, and worked as a judge on The X Factor.

Despite such an amount of time in the spotlight, Demi has succeeded in maintaining her sex life a secret. However, almost two years ago, she acknowledged that she was attracted to both women and men, defining herself as a fluid person, and highlighting the pleasure of experimenting.

Aubrey Plaza

Chances are you know Aubrey Plaza from her hilarious role in the show Parks and Recreation, which aired from 2009 to 2015. If you haven’t seen this great sitcom, but she does ring a bell, it’s probably because you’ve come across one of her interviews on Youtube.

Aubrey’s interviews (especially the ones on late night T.V shows) are memorable for their extreme awkwardness, and plenty of them have gone viral. But enough about that, we’re here to share her experience with bisexuality. Aubrey has said that she feels a masculine element in her energy and that she has fallen in love with both guys and girls.

Daniel Newman

You probably recognize Daniel Newman from The Walking Dead, where he appeared from seasons 6 to 8, but did you know that he also participated in Homeland, Sex and the City, and Vampire Diaries? Daniel is also a musician and he contributed to Twilight’s soundtrack… that’s some serious multitasking!

Although Newman defends the right to keep his private life to himself, he decided to come out after reflecting on how many kids need role models so they can realize that they’re not alone in their struggle with accepting their sexual orientation.

Amber Heard

Daniel’s decision to publicly discuss his sexuality in an interview with People magazine was taken in order to help others feel comfortable with themselves. And that’s why it’s so important when celebrities comment on how they both accept and enjoy their sexuality.

Actress and model Amber Heard, who recently appeared on Aquaman, is also conscious of how she can use her power and reach others and help them. Amber is a committed activist for LGBTQ rights, and she also does her best to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Kristen Stewart

Nevertheless, celebrities like these also have to face stereotypes and stupid attitudes from the industry. For example, Amber Heard affirmed that after she came out, a director admitted to her that he was doubtful about her ability to play a straight woman… and she gracefully answered that she would simply show him how wrong he was.

Another actress who feels more empowered and free after publicly disclosing that she was dating a girl is Kristen Stewart. Kristen had previously gone out with men, but something always felt wrong or trivial about it. But everything changed when she fell in love with Alicia Cargile in 2016.

FInally, I can feel again” Kristen Stewart told to People magazine in 2016.

St. Vincent

And since we’re talking about Kristen Stewart, we also have to dedicate a few lines to one of her exes, Annie Clark, also known as St. Vincent, her musician pseudonym. St. Vincent is one of the most innovative musicians of the decade and her stunning last album, Masseduction, was received with rave reviews.

But Annie is also the topic of discussion on several gossip outlets since she’s dated high-profile women like Kristen Stewart and Cara Delevingne. St. Vincent is extremely private about her romantic life, but she revealed some details of her interesting perspective in an interview with Rolling Stone.

I don’t think about those words (when asked if she was lesbian or gay). I believe in gender and sexual fluidity. I don’t really identify as anything… you can fall in love with anybody.” St. Vincent told to Rolling Stone magazine in 2016.

Sara Ramirez

Perry also told about how she went from singing gospel in church camps to meeting flexible people that helped her think about sexuality without the strict norms of her childhood. Another celebrity that has shared her experience with the goal of helping others whose voice can sometimes go unheard is Sara Ramírez.

Sara is a Mexican actress, and she might ring a bell because of her role as surgeon Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy. She’s a proud, committed LGBTQ activist. When she came out as bisexual, Sara affirmed that it’s essential to support the youth who can suffer various types of discrimination. Sara herself manifested that many intersections exist in her life: a woman of color, bisexual, immigrant, and several more.

Jason Mraz

Sara’s main point is that celebrities like her (and adults in general) have the responsibility of helping children to own their personal narratives. These always have many layers, but it’s important to accept who you are in order to explore your potential and to ignore stereotypes! And Jason Mraz, the famous singer of the massive single I’m Yours, accounts for another curious case.

Jason received help and wisdom from his wife Christina Carano to explore and accept his bisexuality.

“She calls it ‘Two Spirit’, that’s what Native American communities call someone who can love both man and woman.” Jason Mraz told to Billboard magazine in 2018.

Brendon Urie

Brendon Urie, leader of pop-rock band Panic! At the Disco has had a successful couple of years, lately. He collaborated with Taylor Swift for one of the catchiest singles of her new album, his band’s last album was a complete success, and both High Hopes and Hey Look Ma, I Made It are still dominating several charts.

In an interview of 2018, the frontman talked for the first time about being pansexual. Brendon said that despite being married and in love with a woman, he’s also attracted to men. But this attraction is exclusively caused by someone’s personality since he affirms that the other’s look or gender isn’t a relevant aspect at all.

Janelle Monae

Like Brendon Urie and Miley Cyrus, Janelle Monae is an outspoken pansexual. The singer has followed the footsteps of her idol and mentor Prince, not only regarding his prolific musical output but his androgyny and gender fluidity as well.

On her fabulous last album, Dirty Computer, Monae’s lyrics revolve around what it’s like to be a black queer woman in a turbulent and racist society. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the feminist icon explained how she previously considered herself bisexual, until she read about pansexuality and found that she identified more with this concept.

Rita Ora

Janelle told to Rolling Stone that discovering pansexuality was an important moment since this helped her realize that she could still learn more about herself. Her experience provides us with great advice since everyone can benefit from conceiving his or her sexuality as a journey!

Another artist who has used the lyrics of a song to express a new perspective about her sexual orientation is Rita Ora. After releasing the single Girls in collaboration with Charli XCX, Cardi B, and Bebe Rexha, she told her fans on Twitter that the song was about her bisexuality and that she had had passionate experiences with both men and women.

Kehlani

Kehlani is definitely one of the most talented artists amongst those who can easily blend hip-hop, R&B, and pop. Her musical career began to pick off with her acclaimed Cloud 19 mixtape in 2014, and in 2017 she released her official debut studio album, SweetSexySavage.

Kehlani has also been the opening act of Demi Lovato during one of the star’s most successful tours. One of those nights, a picture where they were kissing provoked multiple speculations about Kehlani’s sexuality. She answered on Twitter, revealing that she was a queer woman, especially attracted to non-binary people. The singer stated that she didn’t identify as gay because she felt that the term drew a line regarding which type of human she was supposed to be attracted to.

Antoni Porowski

Queer Eye has rapidly become one of the biggest surprises on Netflix. Though the platform didn’t believe that the show’s formula would be such a success, it’s clear that they were proven wrong, because everyone has fallen in love with Antoni Porowski and the rest of the Fab Five!

In case you didn’t know, the show consists of a group of queer professionals who specialize in food, culture, fashion, design, and personal grooming. They visit a straight man on each episode and work together to help him renovate his wardrobe, his lifestyle, etc. Antoni is the wine and food expert, and he has recently talked about binary labels and how they frustrate him.

Evan Rachel Wood

Antoni says he understands why some people have the urge to define themselves, but this is not his case: Antoni states that the term bisexual doesn’t suit him correctly since it implies that he can only like two things.

On the other hand, Evan Rachel Wood does identify herself as bisexual. The actress and model is fed up with the negative connotations of the term, and that’s why she understands the opinion of people like Antoni who want to eliminate labels. However, Evan also claims that many need the label to identify with something and to belong to a group in some way.

Sarah Paulson

And maybe there’s where the controversy over labels lies, they can be a prison or a useful guide when you’re confused about your sexual orientation at first! Regarding this issue, actress Sarah Paulson has said that she’s always followed her own path.

The star of People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story revealed that her formula to feel free consists of making the choices of her dating life without listening to her community’s expectations and opinions.

Amandla Stenberg

Amandla Stenberg may only be 21 years old, but she has already accomplished a lot in her career as an actress. After playing Rue in The Hunger Games, she shined in Everything, Everything, one of the most compelling romantic films of 2017.

Sara has also proudly come out as gay recently, and she shared some details of her experience in several interviews. The young actress revealed that she felt an enormous relief after accepting her love for women.

I found the freedom to live my best life waiting for me just underneath.” Sarah told to Wonderland magazine in 2018.
