#30. Smallville – Lana & Clark

Lana and Clark were an incredible couple in Smallville, but everyone knew that they would have to break up eventually, since Clark Kent's true love in the Superman comics is Lois Lane.

They had such great chemistry, however, that it was very hard to let them go as a couple. The writers also made sure that the breakup was extremely painful not only to them but also to the viewers.

#29. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air – Will & Lisa

Will was a ladies' man for the most part of the show, so seeing him settling down with Lisa was a breath of fresh (Price of Bel-) air. The two had many problems, but fans always rooted for them.

Their wedding was highly-anticipated but Lisa called it off at the last minute, leaving Will at the altar. They both realized that they were too young to get married, but that they would always care about each other.

#28. Cheers – Sam & Diane

Sam and Diane were the prototype of the "opposites attract" TV couple, with Sam being the rebellious, tough bartender and Diane the intellectual, classy girl. The two had a drama-filled relationship that culminated in their calling off their wedding because Diane was offered a new job far away.

As the workaholic she was, she chose her career over her relationship. She promised to be back in six months, but that turned into six years, and any hope of their getting back together was shattered.

#27. The Wonder Years – Kevin & Winnie

Kevin and Winnie were the sweetest couple on The Wonder Years, mostly because they represented the perfect young love story. Because of that, it was extremely heartbreaking to see them grow up and realize that they weren't meant to be.

Fans were so outraged that showrunners actually brought them back together for the series finale, although it wasn't the original plan. They originally wanted them to just be each other's first love and then let them go their separate ways.

#26. Gilmore Girls – Lorelai & Luke

While Rory had plenty of rocky relationships on Gilmore Girls, fans put all their attention on Lorelai and Luke, who always seemed to go strong. But then, things started to crumble and the two broke up.

This breakup was particularly awful because it showed that even some of the most solid couples can lose their spark. Luckily, they got back together in the end, and we got to see them together on the Netflix reboot.

Saved by the Bell had one of the most iconic teen love triangles ever between Kelly, Zack, and Slater. Everyone knew that Kelly belonged with Zack, but they themselves didn't know that.

Zack blew the whole thing many times and it was heartbreaking to see them break up. Luckily, they got married at the end of the show, but their breakup was hard to get over.

#24. Full House – Steve & DJ

The saddest thing about seeing Steve and DJ from Full House break up was that it happened gradually. There was no big dramatic fight, but they just slowly realized they had nothing in common, which is something that happens to many people.

They struggled to keep the spark alive, but eventually broke up. Because of the fans' demands, Steve came back at the end, and it is implied that they got back together. Still, it would've been nice to see them together on the show.

Eric and Donna seemed like one of those solid couples that, no matter what, will end up together. Despite their ups and downs, they always found their way back to each other, so when they actually broke up, nobody believed it was real.

l. Unfortunately for all of us, it was very real, because the actor who played Eric, Topher Grace, decided to leave the show for good and therefore, their relationship ended for good. Not only did fans have to recover from their breakup, but also from Grace's absence.

Ross and Rachel had so many breakups and makeups that it actually got boring by the end of the show. However, their first breakup was one of the most heartbreaking in TV history.

The show, which was supposed to be a light-hearted comedy, dedicated a whole episode to it, with no jokes and no laughter. It was so sad to see Rachel struggle to let Ross go after he slept with another woman even though they were "on a break". Whose side were you on?

#21. Freaks and Geeks – Lindsay & Nick

Freaks and Geeks lasted for only one season, yet it made an impact on viewers. Right from the beginning, Lindsay and Nick seemed to have a great connection, and the development of the show made it seem like they would end up together.

However, before the show ended, the two went their separate ways, and Nick even fell in love with someone else. It was bittersweet, however, because their breakup was friendly and the two wished each other the best.

Tony and Carmela were the toxic couple everyone hated to love. The two were like a train wreck, and what happens with train wrecks? We can't help but look.

But all the drama, secrets, and infidelity eventually culminated in a very dramatic breakup, and even thought it was the best for everyone involved, it was painful to see them go their separate ways.

Cory and Topanga seemed like a solid, mature couple on Boy Meets World, and the two only had silly fights throughout the show. However, for some reason, the writers thought it would be a good idea to make Cory cheat on Topanga on season 5, which was totally out of character.

The two had a falling out, and it was very tragic. They found their way back to each other in the end, but there was no need to make it so painful! It was great to see them get married at the end of the show, because it was meant to be.

#18. Peep Show – Mark & Sophie

Mark and Sophie had one of the most dissatisfying endings in TV history. The two seemed to belong together, and Mark tried everything in his power to win her heart for countless episodes.

When the two finally made it to the altar after all the ups and downs, the two realized they were unhappy. They called off the wedding in front of all the guests and the priest, and Sophie literally ran away.

#17. Scrubs – J.D. & Elliot

J.D. and Elliot had a Ross-and-Rachel relationship from the very beginning. First, he fell in love with her and tried really hard to win her heart. Then, they got together, but it fell apart shortly after.

Then, they became friends with benefits. Their breakup frustrated fans, because there was no reason for them not to make it work. Eventually, they did, but it took nine seasons.

#16. Roseanne – Darlene & David

Darlene and David were the cutest couple on Roseanne. The two would always bicker because of David's sensitivity and Darlene's hard exterior, but they would always make up. However, they had not one, nor two, but three tragic breakups during the show.

In the series finale, it was revealed that the got back together, which made fans sigh with relief. In the Netflix reboot, however, they stated that they were no longer together, making it a total of four horrible breakups for these two.

#15. Twin Peaks – Donna & James

Twin peaks was a brilliant show that featured many side plots, one of them being the relationship between Donna and James. The two hit it off from the beginning, but James' promiscuous ways took a toll on their romance.

He was then forced to leave town, and in a very heartbreaking moment, he promised Donna he would come back for her. Sadly, the show never touched on the subject again, so we'll never know whether he did or not.

A Different World started out with Lisa Bonet as its lead, but she left the show after the first season. During her time on the show, Wayne was her love interest, and when she left, he got involved with the new lead, Whitley.

This couple turned out to be much better than the one the writers had originally planned, until Dwayne cheated on her. It was shocking to say the least, but luckily, they got back together at the end of the show.

Dawson's Creek was all about drama, but nothing was more dramatic than Dawson and Joey's relationship. The two started out as childhood friends and slowly developed feelings for each other.

Then, when they finally became a couple, they had numerous fights, which culminated in an awful breakup after Joey cheated on him. While everyone hoped they would make up, the two didn't even remain friends.

From the very first episode of the show, we learn that Marshall and Lily have been together for years and fell in love at first sight. They are the perfect example of a healthy, committed relationship, until the writers decided to break them apart before their wedding.

It was sad and it made everyone lose hope in true love. They made up shortly after, but the damage was done, and it felt like their breakup was just a plot device to make the show a little more interesting.

Buffy and Angel were the ultimate teen goth couple in the '90s. Long before Twilight was even a thing, we had a vampire slayer falling in love with a vampire, which brought its fair share of drama into the show.

Their breakup came in a horrific fashion when Buffy, as the vampire slayer she was, was forced to kill him after he lost his human soul. To be fair, there was nothing left of him but still, it was awful.

Sadly, she couldn't, which is almost always the case. He cheated on her and Brenda broke up with him. After that, she fell into a deep depression that lasted for several episodes. This one hurt because many young girls related to what Brenda had to go through.

Leonard and Penny had so many ups and downs it was hard to keep track of them and yet, we all rooted for them to make it. Leonard tried to win Penny over for countless episodes, until he finally made it.

Even after they became an official couple, there was always trouble in paradise, and it was hard to see them break up every single time. It took the writers until the very last season to finally give them some peace and let them be happy together.

The relationship between Aidan and Carrie made viewers turn against Carrie for the first time. She had an amazing guy who loved her with all his heart, and she just cheated on her with the forever-toxic Mr. Big.

When she finally realized that Aidan was the right choice, he didn't want her back, and we all felt our hearts break into a million little pieces. Most of us secretly hoped they would get back together, but that never happened.

Grey's Anatomy never ran out of drama, but Callie and Arizona were one of the most drama-free couples on the show. The two were just perfect for each other and had to jump through many hoops together.

After several seasons, they finally got married and had a child, and that should've been the end of it, Unfortunately, they ended up going through an awful divorce and a ruthless custody battle that left us wondering whether love was dead.

#5. Frasier – Frasier & Julia Wilcox

Frasier had a lot of romances during the show, but none of them stuck out more than the one he had with Julia. This seemed to finally be it, but sadly, it wasn't.

Unfortunately, Frasier never changed his ways, and like all the other women in his life, Julia left him. Everyone hoped she would eventually make a comeback, but the series finale came and went, and Frasier ended up alone.

As we've mentioned before, Rory had many love interests in Gilmore Girls. The one that stood out for many people was Jess, because he brought some balance into her chaotic life.

He was sensitive and romantic, and what girl doesn't like that? Sadly, Rory needed more spunk in her life, and Jess moved to California never to be seen again.

#3. Dwight & Angela

Dwight and Angela had a rocky relationship. They kept it secret for years, until Dwight killed one of Angela's cats. From there, the two were at war, using other people to make each other jealous and cheating on their respective partners with each other.

We all wanted them to make it, but as they were equally stubborn, neither wanted to ask for peace. Finally, right before the series ended, we got to see them make up and raise their baby together.

#2. Friends – Monica & Richard

There is no worst breakup than when two people deeply love each other but they want different things. This is what happened to Monica and Richard, who seemed perfect for each other despite their huge age gap.

But Richard felt he was too old to have children, while being a mother was Monica's biggest dream. It was very painful to see them part ways, but as we all know, it was for the best. Also, Chandler and Monica were meant to be!

#1. Game Of Thrones – Jon Snow & Ygritte

Game of Thrones rarely involved happy endings, especially when it came to love. But the fact that Jon Snow and Ygritte couldn't make it work was beyond awful.

The two came from different worlds, and while that made their relationship special, it is also what tore them apart. They both chose their people instead of each other, and ended up in a battle that took Ygritte's life. At least, she died in his arms.
