Take A Look At The Most Surprising Season Finales In History

#25. The Flash - Season 3

The season 3 finale of The Flash pulled a very risky trick to entice audiences to come back for season 4. They apparently killed its lead character, Barry.

But how could a show called "The Flash" go on without The Flash? Obviously, he wasn't dead after all. It was predictable, but it still left people wondering how the show would continue.

#24. Roseanne - Season 9

This season finale was also the series finale, and the writers went all out. Everyone was shocked when it was revealed that the whole show had been a fantasy in Roseanne's mind.

We then learn that Roseanne had written all these thoughts into a book only loosely inspired by her life. Her real life was actually completely different and so were the other characters'.

#23. Penny Dreadful - Season 3

This season finale was not shocking in itself, but the consequences of it were. Fans couldn't believe it when they saw that the episode ended with a title card that said "The end".

There had been no announcement that this was the last season, let alone the last episode, but creators just decided to end it there. Also, many stories were left in cliffhangers.

#22. Lost — Season 3

Lost is widely known as one of the best and worst TV shows of all time, and it is believed that its decline began with the season 3 finale. Viewers were used to all the flashbacks, but this time was the first time a flashforward was introduced.

Logically, this left everyone wondering how the characters would get into that in the future. This raised even more questions than before and made it more difficult for the writers to figure out how to continue the show.

#21. Veronica Mars — Season 2

Veronica Mars season 2 ended with a bang...literally. Through the whole season, Veronica was determined to find the person who blew up a bus, and in the finale, she finally finds him.

However, he was one step ahead of her and plants another bomb that apparently kills her father. This moment was heart-wrenching, but it is later revealed that her father survives the attack.

#20. The OC — Season 3

The OC was a great show, and many believed that its strongest character was Marissa, played by Mischa Barton. This is why the whole world was left in shock when Marissa was killed at the end of the season in a horrible car crash.

This was due to conflicts between Barton and producers, but this movie eventually killed the show and it ended the following season. Fans just couldn't stand the series without her!

#19. How I Met Your Mother — Season 9

This season finale was also the series finale, and it was one of the most hated and shocking in TV history. Mind you, a massive spoiler is coming.

The premise of the show was that Ted would tell his kids how he had met their mother, but the mother ends up dying and it turns out that all he wanted was to seek his kids' approval to date Robin.

#18. Dinosaurs — Season 4

If you remember the show Dinosaurs, you may remember the very funny and traumatic series finale. As we all know, dinosaurs became extinct when a huge asteroid hit the Earth and wiped them all out of existence.

The show, true to history, did the same thing, but blamed the main character for causing the disaster. It was accurate, but sad to know that everybody ended up dead. They could've dialed down the drama, just a thought.

#17. House of Cards — Season 2

House of Cards was always known for its twists, but the finale of season 2 took everyone by surprise. We thought that the big spin of the show would be Frank taking down President Walker, right?

However, the real twist was that Rachel beat Doug and left him to die in the middle of nowhere. Nobody saw it coming!

#16. St. Elsewhere — Season 6

The St. Elsewhere series finally left everyone speechless. One of the greatest medical dramas ever happened to have one of the worst endings in history.

In a twist similar to the one in Roseanne, Dr. Westphall's son, who has autism, can be seen looking into a snow globe which has the hospital inside, meaning that everything was only happening in his imagination, and it all came from the boy's snow globe. What in the world?!

#15. Pretty Little Liars — Season 5

Pretty Little Liars always had very crazy twists, but they got progressively ridiculous as the seasons went on. The moment where the show lost most of its credibility was at the end of season 5.

In the season finale, the girls are kidnapped by A, who is at this time a girl named Cece, and are forced to live in a gigantic doll house in which they are the kidnapper's toys. How does that make any sense?

14. Scandal — Season 3

Scandal always had surprising moments, but the season 3 finale had way too many of those moments all at once. There was not only an election, but also a bomb goes off.

Then, in a third shocking twist, Fitz's son is standing on stage, has a seizure, and drops dead. This makes people notice Fitz, and his popularity rises.

#13. Orange Is the New Black — Season 1

Orange Is The New Black began with episodes solely focused on character introductions and paving the way for big storylines that would come up later. Some episodes were even kinda boring, but not the end of the season.

Piper, who was shy and scared of being in prison, finally adjusts to prison life and ends up beating up an inmate to a bloody pulp, which is what drives season 2.

#12. Jane the Virgin — Season 2

What was great about Jane the Virgin was that it was self-aware, and it was never afraid of exploiting every telenovela chliché in the book to poke fun at itself.

When having that in mind, it does not come as such a shock when Michael is shot after Jane and Michael's wedding, leaving a cliffhanger of whether he will survive or not.

11. Private Practice — Season 2

Nobody thought Private Practice would go as far as it did, and it made people question whether to keep watching the show. Do you remember the ending of Season 2?

Violet, who is pregnant, is suddenly jumped by a psychiatric patient who ruthlessly and graphically cuts her child out of her pregnant belly. Did the writers think they were working on The Walking Dead?

#10. The Vampire Diaries — Season 3

The Vampire Diaries had many shocking twists, but for three seasons, it seemed like its core story would remain the same. We had a human girl whose heart was pursued by two cute vampires.

But in the season 3 finale, Elena is turned into a vampire to save her life and remains that way until the end of the show. Too cheesy to be true.

#9. American Horror Story — Season 1

Although it was obvious that the first season of American Horror Story was going to end in a scary, creepy twist, we still didn't see this coming.

As it turned out, a few characters had been actually dead all along, haunting the other ones who were alive. Then, many of the strange things that happened during the season began to make sense.

#8. Westworld — Season 1

Westworld was as entertaining as it was confusing during season 1. There were many things that didn't make much sense, until a shocking revelation takes place in the season finale.

The audience finds out that the events shown were happening at different moments in history, and the villain of the story was an older version of the one we always knew.

#7. Game of Thrones — Season 5

Game of Thrones always took things way too far, but this one was infamously shocking. Not only do several characters die as per usual, but Cersei is forced to atone for her sins by walking naked on the street.

The cherry on top was the fact that the beloved Jon Snow is murdered by the Night's Watch, and the episode ends with him lying in a pool of his own blood.

#6. Grey’s Anatomy — Season 5

Grey's Anatomy set a precedent for itself with the season 5 finale, because it got more dramatic than it ever did up until that point. A guy with a burned face is brought to the emergency room, about to die, and at the end of the episode, it is revealed that it was George all along.

Not only that, but Izzie, his love interest, is also fighting for her life. It ends with a cliffhanger of whether any of them survived.

#5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer — Season 5

Buffy the Vampire Slayer had vampires, werewolves, demons, and a lot of crazy stuff going on. One of the weirdest things that happened was that Buffy, the main character, died at the end of season 5.

Of course, she didn't stay dead, or else there wouldn't be a show anymore. She gives her life to save her sister, but later comes back alive and well.

#4. Dexter — Season 4

Dexter got himself in a lot of trouble through the whole show, but he always ended up winning against his rivals. This is why the end of season 4 was extremely unexpected.

This time, the villain, the Trinity Killer, actually bested Dexter and got to his wife, Rita, who is murdered in front of their son, Harrison, in a scene made to resemble Dexter's mom's death.

#3. The Walking Dead — Season 6

The Walking Dead spent most of season 6 building up Negan, the worst villain the show ever saw. The season ended with his identity being revealed as the group is ambushed.

Then, Negan chooses someone to kill in front of the group, but the victim is not revealed. This was definitely one of the biggest cliffhangers in history.

#2. Supernatural — Season 5

Because Supernatural was supposed to end on season 5 and it was not known whether the show would continue, the final episode of the season ends with Chuck Shurley, who is seen wrapping up the story of the show as he is writing it on his computer.

He looks into the camera, breaking the fourth wall, and he says "Nothing ever really ends, does it?" and then disappears. The show continued, however, and everyone was confused.

#1. Breaking Bad — Season 4

Breaking Bad kept getting more and more thrilling as Walter morphed into Heisenberg. We never knew where Walter would draw the line and reach his limit (spoiler alert: he never does!).

However, seeing him blow up his enemy, Gus, with a bomb that blew his face off was a little too much. The title of the episode, called "Face Off", is a small spoiler for it.
