How To Tell If You Have Hooded Eyes & 5 Makeup Tips To Make Them Pop

Do You Have Hooded Eyes?

You likely have hooded eyes if the skin seems to fold down from your brow bone on top of your lash line. Also, it can be a bit difficult to find your natural crease, especially with your eyes closed.

Some people have this eye shape since birth, but others develop hooded eyes as they grow older. The excess skin and soft tissue around the eyebrow cover the eyelid like a “hood,” leaving a visible crease.

The Cut Crease

This old, dramatic look was practically made for hooded eyes. A cut crease creates the illusion that you have more of a lid and a separate brow bone. "It gives [the eye shape] more of a crease where they wouldn't have it before," says celebrity makeup artist AJ Crimson.

It’s a pretty simple look. After applying a light shade across the entire lid, contour with a medium-matte shade in the crease, and blend toward the brow bone.

Smudge-Proof Mascara

Many with hooded eyes find that, toward the end of the day, their mascara gets transferred onto their brow bone. That’s because the brow bone is close to the lash line.

Waterproof mascara is a must for anyone with hooded eyes. Especially in the summer, switch to a mascara with a formula that can stand up to beach days, outdoor activities and a little sweat.

The Batwing Liner

The batwing liner looks like a regular cat-eye when you open your eyes, with a sharp and straight wing, but when you close your eyes, the pigment swoops in a tad, resembling a tiny batwing.

First, draw a line from the last eyelash to the tail of the brow. Then, work your way up the lash line and fill in the wing shape. It’s important not to connect the peak to the liner because it will look wonky.

Concealer

There’s a makeup trick that helps the eye appear bigger and lifted, and it only involves concealer. First, apply concealer in a vertical line from the corner of the inside of your eye down to the midshaft of your nose and add a small dab on the outer corner of the eye. Then blend the product toward your eye and up and around the corner of the eye.

Doing this will blend the concealer into the rest of the face and foundation, making your eyes appear larger and covering dark circles at the same time.

Highlighter

Highlighting the entire brow bone makes it look puffy and saggy. Highlighter goes on places you usually want to highlight, as it helps bring forth the area. So applying it to an already prominent brow bone can make it appear bigger.

It’s best to highlight above the brow bone and not the entirety of it. Place the product right under the brow arch to help define the area without bringing the entire brow bone forward.
